Film Event: When Sophie Met Gourmet Cinema Club

Hello, hello! I've been very lucky the last few weeks to go to some amazing events and today I''m sharing my experience at Gourmet Cinema Club. Just in time for my 24th birthday, I was kindly invited by Virgin Experience Days in association with All I Want VIP to check out their ultimate cinema experience for two.

Hosted by Sanctum Soho Hotel, Gourmet Cinema Club offers a 5 star cinema experience in the basement of this kitsch hotel - complete with a sharing food platter, champagne and vintage films. GCC was screening some 1980's classics and so myself and my boyfriend, Jack, popped along to partake in some fine-dining and watch romantic comedy classic, When Harry Met Sally (Rob Reiner, 1989).

On arrival, we were greeted with edible cinema tickets and champagne which I thought was a really nice touch! Once the film started, we were treated to table service and a sharing platter for two which included salmon bagels, cheese rolls, gourmet crisps, chocolate doughnuts and brownies. Though this platter probably would have done one of us, it was a treat and nice to have with a glass of champagne in front of a great movie. The screening is kept small which I like also - no one likes a packed movie screen!

When Harry Met Sally (Rob Reiner, 1989) ****

Thrown together when they share a car to New York, Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) become the most unlikely of friends following dramatic break-ups. Their initial love-hate bond spirals into a platonic, friendship which spans decades until they begin to realise that the love of their lives might have been there all along.

Whether you've seen it or not, you've probably all seen the famous cafe scene where Meg Ryan fakes orgasm over a sandwich. Celebrating all things taboo, When Harry Met Sally is about the unspoken themes of relationships - sex, fears of getting old and being single and the self-abuse we all put ourselves though during breakups. Whilst the two are doomed to end up together from the start and Reiner removes all elements of surprise, the journey is just as enjoyable.

Now 25 years old, When Harry Met Sally remains one of the most quotable and referenced romantic comedies of all time. Paired with charming cinematography and direction by Reiner, cheerful vulgarity and a wonderful cast (including Carrie Fisher) the film certainly set the standard for all romantic comedies to follow. When Harry Met Sally gets a Sophie star rating of 4 out of 5 stars - a true 80's classic which remains the original romantic comedy.

Whilst the food was not necessarily the highlight (we still went out for dinner afterwards!), I think if you can get a great film selection, I would recommend the experience to film fans looking for a more special night to the movies. The platter and edible tickets were a lovely touch, the hotel was very welcoming and I loved the ambience.
If you'd like to experience Gourmet Cinema Club, simply purchase the package and contact the bookings team within 8 months to arrange a screen time of your choice. Until next time movie-goers,

  3. This looks like a great date :) Movie theaters really need to improve the experience they give their customers. I remember this one place in San Francisco where there was a lady who played an organ before the show started. Then she disappeared as the platform she was on descended through the stage in front of the screen. Classy. I like that this skips the annoyance of having to queue for refreshments. Good that it was a nice romantic film that you two saw.

Sophie, I keep meaning to ask you about your favorite horror films since that was part of your film studies at uni. I see you reblogging Kubrick's The Shining on tumblr so that must be one of them. But what are some of the others?

    1. Yeah was a nice change given I don't think I've ever seen a romantic comedy in a theatre, I'm not always so in for rom-coms but was very enjoyable. I agree, although sometimes the old fashioned cinema experience is a treat also!

I've always been a big fan of horror - I did my dissertation on George A. Romero films so they're really interesting (more so for the social and political aspect of it). I also love The Devils Rejects, Korean and Japanese Horror, classical hollywood horror, the list goes on and on!

  11. Going in the next couple of months. Is there anywhere to find what films they have scheduled?

    1. Hey Tim,

I think the idea is you purchase the package/voucher and then you email their bookings team and request a schedule. It's valid for 8 months according to their website so you can pick any screening in that time. Hope that helps :)
