Foodie Review: Bird, Shoreditch

Hello, hello! Back again with a foodie review for you to get your teeth in to. Today I'm sharing a place that had been on mine and Jack's list of places to visit for a while - Bird in Shoreditch. Being only round the corner from the Lazy Oaf launch party a few weeks back, it seemed the perfect excuse to grab some late night dinner...

For those who haven't visited Bird quite yet, they are famous for their Korean/American fried chicken and waffles. Korean/America? Yep, that's right. Think fried chicken, waffles and burgers with an Asian infusion. Made entirely gluten free (though, personally I rather enjoy gluten in my food) and with everything fried freshly in house, each dish really does have that homemade quality bursting with flavour.

Jack opted for the Parm Burger (pictured above) - a fried chicken burger made with parma ham and marinated mozzarella cheese, served in a brioche bun. I chose the Fried Chicken and Waffles which comes with a side of gluten free maple syrup. Despite being fried chicken and waffles, it was surprisingly light and not at all greasy leaving me pleasantly full but not stuffed. The chicken was a little dry but clearly fresh while the waffles are savoury, again a little dry but overall I enjoyed it. I think if I were to visit again I would opt for a burger instead as I felt the chicken was not quite as juicy as I had hoped for (perhaps due to being gluten free). Jack also ordered a side order of fries and these have a subtle but delicious curry seasoning. The fries alone were worth the visit.

We decided to skip dessert as it was getting pretty late (for a work night) but on our way out the door we were surprised with these giant doughnuts gifted to us by our waiter.  Despite being gluten-free, these were huge, light and fluffy. Just look how chocolatey! Other options on the dessert menu included banana splits, doughnut of the day and doughnuts and ice cream.

The service was speedy and pleasant and overall, Jack's expectation totally lived up to the hype. I really enjoyed my food though I think if I went again I'd go for a burger instead as I'm not great with meat on a bone and the chicken needed a little added moisture. I loved the 70's inspired decor and the style of the place also, I'd certainly recommend it to any chicken fans. I terms of value for money, we definitely had our fill from our chosen dishes and the food is the average value you would expect from a Shoreditch based restaurant, each dish priced at around £9-12, ideal for a quick bite on an evening out or for a lunch treat.

Thanks to Bird for the free doughnuts and excellent service! What cool food places have you tried recently? Where are your favourite places to eat?

Until next time fellow-foodies,

  4. Despite being terrified of actual, living birds (quite a troublesome phobia living in London...!), this sounds brilliant - good value too for Shoreditch! Will have to add it to my ever-growing list of places to pop into! x

  10. Ooh fried chicken the Korean way? Yes please! I love reading up on new places to check out and meal reviews, but I suppose one of the downfalls for most of these would be that I can't try them out in Australia :( Still, love to see new food places so I can get inspired to find something similar near me! :)

  11. This sounds really cool and I love the fusion of cultures. The idea of Korean/American fusion sounds unusual but the burger looks and sounds delicious and that donut(!). I'm sold! I tried a taco with Japanese influence a few weeks ago here in NYC which was so good x

    1. Burger club?? What's that? That sounds awesome! Oh really? That's such a shame - I think because it's gluten free, it doesn't have alot of the fats and juices that normally make it really juicy. I think if I went again I would definitely go for a burger instead x

  16. I visited right after Christmas twice last year in order to do a review, and I liked the chicken and waffles, but I've had better chicken sandwiches.
