Foodie Review: Golden Dragon at Bang Bang Oriental, Colindale

Regular readers of my foodie reviews will know by now that asian cuisine is by far my favourite. I could live on it for the rest of my life. A few months ago, I was pleased to have been invited along to London's largest Asian foodhall to try out Golden Dragon in Colinsdale, North London.

Bang Bang Oriental, London's largest asian foodhall, is made up of 27 different restaurants, with a capacity of 450. As you can imagine, there is certainly a lot to choose from for those of you who just love asian dining. Having arrived and had a quick wander round the various venders, myself and Fran made our way downstairs to the Golden Dragon restaurant*

Having been shown to our seats, it was time to pick out some appetisers. I'm a huge fan of seafood and so, naturally, I opted for the Scallops (served with garlic oil and chilli), Prawn Toast and Ebi Prawns (served with a chilli sauce).  I'm ashamed to admit that this was actually my first time having prawn toast but it was absolutely delicious and very delicately cooked; as were my ebi prawns.

If I had to find a flaw, however, I would say that I was slightly disappointed by the scallops which, although very tasty, were a little bit undercooked. There's nothing better than a seared scallop and these really just needed a tiny bit longer, especially when you're paying £8 per single scallop. That said, the garlic sauce they were served in and the presentation was great and I really enjoyed each dish.

Having wolfed down our starters, it was now time for mains. Again keeping with the seafood theme, I decided to go for the Singapore Style Satay Crab Vermicelli; a (very) large crab served with chilli, ginger with satay sauce with curry spices. I honestly feel as though I would go back just for this dish alone. The crab was brilliantly cooked and, combined with the sauce and noodles, there was just so much flavour.

Now, given the price of this (which I believe was only around £20), I assumed that this would be for one person. I was very wrong. When the plate arrived, I soon realised that this was a sharer for up to 4 people. I did make good work of it though, chowing down on meaty crab claw and those delicious noodles. I will say that I did force Fran to help me out as well although I was very much defeated.

Overall, Golden Dragon gets a solid 3/5 from me. Our time there was very pleasant, the prices are very reasonable for the size of the plate and I really enjoyed my food selections. One note I do have is that, as the evening went on, it was very difficult to get hold of a member of staff. However, when we were served they were fantastic and very friendly.

Having eaten our weight in asian cuisine, it was time to head home but not before stopping off at the supermarket for some Japanese sweeties and treats. All in all, I really enjoyed my visit to Bang Bang Oriental and would love to go back soon to try out all the other food stalls.

Well, that's it for another foodie review, huge thanks to Golden Dragon for their hospitality. Have you been to Bang Bang Oriental yet? What did you make of it? As always, I love reading your comments so please do leave me lots of lovely ones below.

Until next time fellow foodies,

  1. this sounds fab! Craving some prawn toast now, will have to check this out when I'm in London next. I used to live in an area with an insane Asian Buffet which defeated anything i've had before, haven't found anything to beat that as of yet!
