Film Event: Underground Film Club

Well it's over for another year but I'm still channeling Christmas spirit. Last weekend, Jack and I attended the Underground Film Club to sample one of their many festive screenings over the Christmas and New Year period.

Teaming up with LG, Underground Film Club have taken over the Vaults of Waterloo for some atmospheric, festive Christmas and New Year viewing. Inside, it's kitted out with a mini golf course, waffle house, bars and RockaDollar Dog stand. Usually known as Roof Top Cinema during the Spring/Summer months, they've taken to the tunnels below as the nights get colder; hosting a series of Christmas screenings including Home Alone (1990), Elf (2003) and Love Actually (2003). Being a big lover of all things film and Christmassy, I opted for the Disney classic that is The Muppet Christmas Carol. Here's a little look...

Before heading upstairs to the film screening, Jack and I sampled in the delights of Rockadolla Dogs - gourmet hot dogs created by The Hawksmoor's own Knightsbridge head chef. Jack went for a pulled pork and funnel slaw dog while I sampled the three cheeses sauce myself. Before leaving, we grabbed a salted caramel ice cream and nutella waffle which was absolutely amazing. If food is less your thing, however, and you're looking for some cocktails then Smokey Joe's is the place for you. You can grab a pre-film drink at the blue's themed bar (which includes live music) and partake in their wide selection of craft beers, bourbons and whiskys.

It seems that cinema is regaining the experience it was meant to be. For me, it has always been the case but, years ago, before downloads, blu-rays and streaming, you had no choice but to go to the cinema and engage in the experience of it all. Underground Film Club embraces this whole heartedly - amercing you in the theater scenery but without having to listen to the chewing and chattering of those around you; providing you with noise-reducing, personal wireless headphones. I won't review the film today - we all know how wonderful it is, and I watch it every year at home anyway but I loved the atmosphere and, once everyone got seated, the Vaults made for easy and comfortable viewing.

So that's it for another cinema event. Thanks so much to Underground Film Club for having us - we absolutely loved the grub and, of course, the film was just what I needed to get me in the Christmas spirit. Some might consider £12-15 a ticket fairly expensive but, given Odeon charge £10 for a normal 2D film, I'm more than happy to pay a little bit extra to enjoy a real cinema experience and have a proper day out.

Christmas screenings at Underground Film Club continue until January 16th and you can purchase tickets online hereHave you ever been to Underground Film Club? What Christmas films have you been watching in the build up this Christmas? As always, I love reading your comments so please do leave them below!

Hope everyone's enjoying the Christmas break!

  1. I love your alliteration describing chewing and chattering as a good reason that noise canceling headphones should be made available when going to the cinema. I'll add crying (babies) to the your list. I've never been to rooftop or underground film club and your posts make me want to go back to London. As for Christmas films, my mom is still recovering in hospital so there hasn't been much of that. One thing I'm really looking forward to is your reviews for the upcoming film award season, Sophie.

I think they do Rooftop Cinema in some places in the US so maybe if one comes to you, you can go :) Or you should just visit London again ;) Well, it's funny you should say that because my Top 5 Films of 2015 is currently sitting in my drafts ready to go in a few days - as is my films to look forward to in 2016 :D I hope you like them! Merry Christmas, Gil :)

  5. Such brilliant photographs, I've heard so much about the Underground Film Club and it looks and sounds so much better than what I had imagined! I completely agree that the experience of cinema was becoming lost, but this looks like a wonderful way to enjoy a night of great film and great company
